Welcome to the Llewellyn Shetland Pony Stud - sometimes known as the 'home of the All Blacks' - something to do with the colour of pony we predominantly breed.

Our stud was established in 1982 with the importation of several Australian mares and a purebred stallion Fireblaze of Marshwood, who was imported from Scotland via Australia.
These mares combined with the excellent bloodlines of Fireblaze to supply some quality foals which went on to form the basis of the stud when Fireblaze eventually returned to Australia.

One of these foals was Llewellyn Conrad who was retained as a stallion and went on to sire some excellent progeny. Conrad also perfomed supremely in the show ring with his most notable success being winner of the Isaac Wildlife Trophy for the Champion of Champions, at the Canterbury Pony Breeders Show in 1984.
Today the stud is still breeding mainly black Shetlands but has moved away from the early emphasis on smaller sized ponies to breeding something a little bigger suitable for riding and for use in events like the Shetland Steeplechase held at the Canterbury and Amberley A. & P. Shows.

This event was started several years ago and is now one of the highlights of the shows. In the weeks leading up to this event, Society members supply ponies and young riders are schooled at Llewellyn to get the ponies trained up and ready to handle this fast and exciting event.

Our resident stallion is Llewellyn Moritz and so far he has only been used over our own mares and has produced two black fillies, a black colt and a chestnut colt. Next season he will be available to a limited number of outside mares.

The majority of our ponies are broken to saddle, with Finesse, Midnight and Foxfire being our steeplechase ponies. These three, plus our geriatric mare, Tenacity, are presently being used to teach local school children to ride.
